A blast from the past

The Auckland Star, Saturday, August 1, 1891
An event of rather uncommon occurrence took place on Wednesday evening last, when Mr Stewart invited the adult males of Helensville and several from the adjacent districts to be present at a farewell supper for Mr C. M. Burton, who is leaving Mr Stewart’s store ... Some 150 accepted the invitation to supper, which took place in the Foresters’ Hall. … After justice had been done in true Helensville style to the eatables, all sorts of wines and spirits were distributed and the real business of the evening commenced…
The weather here at present is nothing to boast of and the roads are – well, not roads at all, but vile traps to catch the unwary traveler, and cause him to use language unbecoming a Christian. Helensville Correspondent.
