DESCRIPTION:Helen Martin \nMeet Helen Martin\, Freelance Journalist\nHelen was first published when\, aged 12; she won an international short story competition and a £100 prize. That win convinced her she could be a professional writer and\, after graduating from Auckland University with an M.A. (Hons) in English\, she followed a dual career as a teacher and freelance non-fiction writer. For many years she taught English and Media Studies at secondary school level\, then film and television studies at tertiary. Her publications include columns as film critic for magazines including the NZ Listener\, On Film and Alternative Cinema and several book chapters\, Te Ara online dictionary entries and co-authored books on New Zealand cinema and television\, one of which won a national award.\nShe’s currently enjoying writing for two rural magazines\, Valley Voice and Helensville Community News\, has written a self-published book on her paternal family history and is now working on its companion\, her maternal family history. SUMMARY:South Kaipara clean up day
DESCRIPTION:Christina Norton from South Head was regularly doing beach clean ups with her friends. Because of the huge mass of rubbish Christina decided to create a Facebook page to help encourage others to stop littering and help keep our beaches clean by creating events for people to meet up\, do their bit and clean the beach Saturday 15th January was the groups official cleanup day\, “It was a stunning day! I met lots of amazing people\, we filled 2 trailers and a Ute then had a BBQ and went for a swim. We had locals from South head / Whangaparoa and even as far as One Tree Hill!!”\nJoin facebook page South Kaipara clean ups for update on future beach clean up events. Anyone can come along\, many hands make light work! Our next Clean Up day is Saturday 10th February. SUMMARY:Helensville Christmas Parade
DESCRIPTION:CHRISTMAS COMING TO HELENSVILLE \nChristmas Parade midday Saturday 2nd December. Email helchrisfest@gmail.com or phone 021488427 for entry forms. \nBouncy castle\, face painting\, ice cream and entertainment from 9.30am in Creek Lane with various food stalls through the parade route. Also Santa at RSA for photos. \nChildren’s bike\, trike and scooter decorating competition will be judged before the parade commences\, with entrants having opportunity to join in the parade from outside the Library. Entry forms available as above. \nParade ends at Helensville Museum where there will be music festival\, lolly scramble\, food\, Santa photos\, bouncy castle\, from 1pm. Kaipara Classic Car Club bar will be operating in separate licensed space. \nThe Levites\, Stan Walker’s backing band with support artist Erakah\, will headline the music festival\, with great local bands in the mix. Jacob Nansen (aka Jakes) leads the Levites and is Stan’s music director. The Levites will be supported by Brass4sho and Stan Walker’s backing vocalists Nathan and Lilo. Add to that Adeaze and Ness Abernethy. \nShare some Cheer \nNoel’s Christmas Trees are donating trees which will be given to local families via The Angel Fund. You can donate decorations\, bought or home made\, by leaving them at Helensville Library from 1st December. Trees and decorations will be distributed from 9th December. \nThe Helensville Art Centre are providing free workshops to learn how to make decorations\, with all items made donated to this project. Saturday 18th November 12.30pm til 2pm\, Saturday 25th November 10.30am tilmidday. Registration at the Art Centre will secure your place. \n

SUMMARY:Glass Artist at the Kaukapakapa Library
DESCRIPTION:Meet Kari Lindsay-Beale\, a glass and glass jewellery artist\, whose work is an expression of her love of nature\, colour and harmony. First introduced to glass in 2008\, Kari now creates award-winning pieces as “KARILEA - glass with soul”\, and uses mainly torch worked and fused glass.  Each work is a representation of balance; light and dark\, transparent and opaque\, strong and delicate\, masculine and feminine.  Kari describes the process as an art form which can be tremendously rewarding\, requiring both a willingness to experiment and an understanding of alchemy.
