SUMMARY:Historic Kaukapakapa Library
DESCRIPTION:In the late 1880’s the Kaukapakapa community needed a larger public hall\, there being prior to this a combined school/library/hall building.  Contention arose as to its location as the village had developed in two distinct portions - north and south Kaukapakapa.  A compromise was reached and in 1890 a new hall was built on land donated by the Henley family\, midway between the two areas.  The bad news being this was extremely flood prone.  Many years and many floods later\, the Hall had fallen into disrepair and come to the attention of the Rodney Council\, which recommended its closure.  Once again the community rallied\, and twenty years ago in 1999\, both the hall and the library crossed the road to their present position at the heart of Kaukapakapa.  It’s now five years since the library was reopened in conjunction with the Kaukapakapa Village Market\, every third Sunday of the month.  Come along and find out more about the history of the hall\, the library and all things Kaukapakapa.
