With the tagline ‘bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope’, Habitat for Humanity is a global project which every 24 hours completes 115 homes around the world, some newly built, some repaired. In 2017 team leader Alex van Dam and Kaipara College student Qunique Tarawa took part in a successful Habitat for Humanity project in Thailand, where they helped build a house for a family in Rayong.
Alex, who is a community youth worker for SKYouth, is now seeking support for a Habitat for Humanity’s annual youth build, which is taking place in Nadi Fiji in 2020.A team of at least 15 people is being recruited and currently three local youth have signed up. “It’s open to all people in New Zealand, so if anyone has friends or family in the wider area who are interested in the build they should get in touch,” says Alex. “We will be fundraising soon, and we would like to ask for donations of any goods for raffles and auctions.”
Cost is approximately $2,300 (plus airfares). To register your interest or find out more contact Alex on 021 029 38002, alex_highmaintenance@hotmail.com
