Helensville Primary School Update

Have a Go Sailing Day

15 lucky Year 7 & 8 Helensville Primary School students took part in the Volvo “Have a Go Sailing Day’, in March. The purpose of the day was to experience sailing an optimist yacht and gain water confidence in the ocean. The students learnt how to set up the yacht, sail in pairs, sail solo and even how to capsize. It was such a popular experience that NZ Sailing is going to offer it again to HPS in Term 4.

Swimming

Some photos of our swimming sports for Years 5-8. We had a great day, so many children challenging themselves to complete individual goals from completing a whole length, to make the finals and beating their personal bests. The students have taken part in the intensive GAAP swimming programme with instructors at Parakai Springs. (GAAP) Greater Auckland Aquatic Plan, provides funding towards swimming instructors for our students. Each team has lessons every day for 2 weeks. So the school has been participating for 4 weeks. An intensive programme which gets results quickly. The focus is not only on stroke technique but also survival skills. This is supplemented by teachers also in the pool, teaching more survival skills, water confidence and racing techniques. The students and staff wish to thank them for the amazing expertise and helping our students push themselves out of their comfort zones.
