At Hospice West Auckland, we believe that everyone should have access to free specialist palliative care. This Hospice Awareness Week (15th – 21st May), we are highlighting the growing demand for specialist palliative care in our community.
As the West Auckland population increases, so do our patient numbers. In the past six months we have supported 484 patients and their whanau, caring for an average of 240 patients at any one time – and these numbers are growing. There is also an increase in the complexity of cases. Within advance care planning, where people think about and plan for their end-of-life care, we are seeing the added burden of current lifestyle factors such as increased financial pressure, mental health concerns and complicated family arrangements.
Hospice West Auckland is partly funded by Te Whatu Ora and partly funded by donations and revenue raised through the Hospice Op Shops. Our services are provided free of charge to patients and whanau - and that’s only made possible with the support of the West Auckland community.
Through your generosity, our patients are empowered to choose to remain in their homes that they love without compromising their quality of care. Your donation also helps to fund our vital 24-hour, 7 days support line, so that advice and reassurance is only ever a phone call away, and carers and whanau need never feel alone.
