At Kaipara College students get a multitude of opportunities to grow and develop their leadership, whether it be in a sports team, a band, the cast for a drama production, in their whanau class, the peer support programme or in a club or student interest group. All leadership starts with self-leadership, as being a positive self-leader is a prerequisite to positively leading others. On an on-going basis teaching young people to be self-leaders is part of what we do at school. This is important because it helps them develop essential skills and qualities that will positively impact their lives in the future.
It’s the time of year again to start the process of selecting our team of student leaders for 2024.
Our student leaders play an important role at Kaipara College. Not only do they act as role models for the student body, they are representative of our students and have an advocacy role in terms of raising student voice about their needs and concerns. We expect our student leaders to exhibit qualities of responsibility, integrity and empathy, and to embody and epitomize our school WAKA values of Whanaungatanga, Aroha, Kaitiakitanga and Angitutanga. Student leaders also provide peer support and mentoring for other students, helping them navigate academic and social challenges, and fostering a sense of belonging and community in the school. Organising school events and activities for others including clubs, fundraisers, projects and social events and representing the school at community events such as the Anzac Day memorial service are other tasks our brilliant student leaders willingly undertake.
As you can see, being a student leader is a big responsibility. Managing these tasks on top of the demands of their academic programme, sporting commitments and personal lives requires courage and commitment. We are lucky at Kaipara College to have young people who are more than capable of stepping into the student leadership space, enhancing the educational experience, fostering their own growth and the growth of others, and helping to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all our students.
