Norwest Mathex Competition 2016

Mathex 2016An event which is fun, fast and energetic and raises the profile of mathematics, the Norwest Mathex Competition, has been held in Helensville for the second consecutive year. Hosted by Kaipara College, the competition was organised by Jo Knox, maths specialist teacher at Helensville School and mathematics consultant for Maths Development Ltd, and Paige Bayliss, maths specialist teacher at Kaipara College. The day included competitionsfor Year 5/6, Year 7 and Year 8 students, with 38 teams of four students from North-West schools competing. They were: St Paul’s Primary; Waimauku School; Marina View School; Massey Primary; Waitakere Primary; Helensville Primary; Hare Krishna School; Parakai School; Hobsonville Primary; Huapai School and Riverhead School.
Kaipara College students created many of the problems used in the competition and they also helped as markers and scorers on the day.
Students were required to work collaboratively to solve up to 20 questions, the winner being either the first to finish or the school with the most correctly answered after 30 minutes. Competition was fierce, especially in the Year 7 event, where teams from Huapai, Helensville and Waimauku finished first equal after the 30 minutes’ allotted time and had to go to a tie-break.
The results were:
Year 8: 1st Hobsonville A; 2nd Waimauku A
Year 7: 1st Waimauku A; 2nd Helensville A
Year 5/6: 1st St Paul’s A; 2nd Huapai
Winner trophies were sponsored by Maths Development Ltd. It is hoped the competition will continue as an annual event.
