South Kaipara Rotary has completed the first phase of Parakai School’s new orchard! Students will be able to learn how to care for the trees and how to harvest and process a variety of fruits, including apples, pears, peaches, plums, lemons, and oranges.
The first phase involved Parakai students, their families, South Kaipara Rotary, Henderson Rotary, and members of the community putting together 26 planter boxes.
In phase two, mulch, sheep wool and topsoil were added to the planter boxes, and then the fruit trees were planted.
The new orchard has been shifted several meters to make room for more classrooms and has also been significantly raised to avoid water logged roots that were hampering growth in the previous orchard. South Kaipara Rotary looks forward to working with Parakai School again and seeing how the students choose to use the orchard in their studies.
