Restoration work in the All Saints Kaukapakapa cemetery is ongoing with another wave of repairs to headstones commencing in the next few months. Following on from the great effort by the NZ Remembrance Army restoring our veteran’s graves and subsequent repairs to eight badly damaged headstones, another nineteen repairs will be undertaken.
Spending lockdown going through the amazing research produced by Bruce Shanks, descendant of an early settler family, Megan Paterson has identified around eighty unmarked graves in the cemetery. Many of these are either early graves or children’s graves and it’s thought that perhaps these were marked by wooden crosses which haven’t stood the test of time. The next challenge is to get these marked with a view to a more permanent solution being found.
