Help Shape the Future of Kaipara College – Stand for the School Board.

Are you passionate about education and your local community? Do you want to play a meaningful role in shaping the future of our young people? If so, Kaipara College needs you. With School Board elections coming up, now is the perfect time to step forward and make a real difference. Every state and state-integrated school in New Zealand, including Kaipara College, is governed by a School Board – a crown entity that plays a vital leadership role. School boards are made up of everyday people from all walks of life who are committed to seeing students succeed. You don’t need a legal or business background. What matters most is that you care about education and are ready to contribute your time, voice, and passion. Kaipara College needs board members who reflect the diversity of our vibrant community. From farmers to office workers, caregivers to retirees, tradies to professionals – anyone can stand for election. If you’re a parent, caregiver or legal guardian of a student enrolled full-time, you’re eligible to both vote and stand as a parent representative. This is your opportunity to influence how our school is run at the highest level.

So, what exactly does the School Board do? The board has legal responsibility and accountability for the overall performance and wellbeing of the school. Under the Education and Training Act 2020, board members are charged with ensuring every student achieves their full potential, providing a safe learning environment, and upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. This includes setting the school’s strategic direction, overseeing financial decisions, approving key policies, and engaging with the wider school community. Importantly, the board does not manage the daily running of the school – that’s the role of the principal and staff. Instead, board members are strategic leaders, helping guide Kaipara College into the future. You may be wondering if you have the right skills. The truth is, most of the qualities a good board member needs aren’t found on a CV. If you can work well in a team, ask thoughtful questions, communicate clearly, and stay connected to what’s happening in your community, you’ve got what it takes. Training and support are provided, so you won’t be left to figure it out alone.

Standing for the School Board role is a chance to be an advocate for students, a supporter of teachers, and a champion for progress. Whether you’re looking to give back to the community, develop leadership skills, or help shape the future of local education, becoming a board member is a powerful and rewarding way to get involved. Nominations for the upcoming elections will open soon. Let your voice be heard. Put your name forward and be part of something bigger. Kaipara College needs leaders like you – step up and make a difference.
