Kumeu resident Liza Milina, who grew up in Helensville and attended Kaipara College, has spent many years rehabbing and rejuvenating tired and broken racehorses. She is now fighting her own battle, having recently been diagnosed with Grade 4 malignant brain cancer.
After three brain surgeries Liza started conventional radiotherapy and chemotherapy in November. Without health insurance, Liza has to fund private MRI’s to monitor the size of her rapidly growing tumour. Concurrently with her conventional treatment, she is taking advice on new immunotherapy which harnesses the body’s own immune defences to fight rogue cells, but it is likely she will have to travel overseas to access this.
