Help Te Awaroa / Helensville celebrate its proud heritage on the weekend of October 4th and 5th as part of Auckland Heritage Festival’s “Auckland at Play”. There will be lots to see and do.
Te Awaroa Museum will have displays showing the histories of Rugby, Equine sports (including Racing), our cinemas and amateur dramatics, Kaipatiki (Parakai), Scouts Guides and Brownies, as well as a large Barbie exhibition from well-known collector Patsy Carlyle.
Helensville Railway Museum will be celebrating 150 years of rail to Te Awaroa Helensville. They will have Sammy the Steam train giving children’s rides, as well as having their museum and model railway operating. They have a great display of Helensville rail history.
Across the road the Grand Hotel plans to open for tea and scones, a rare opportunity to see inside one of Te Awaroa’s iconic buildings. The Ginger Crunch Café, in the original railway station, will also be open. Train memorabilia from the late John Perry’s collection will be displayed in the Regent Theatre’s windows.
Military memorabilia will be showcased at the Kaipara Memorial RSA, giving all an opportunity to see their newly revamped premises, while a vintage market will be in full swing next door in the Helensville War Memorial Hall, as will the Lions Book Stall. The large, recently completed heritage mural, donated by the Walker family, on the Progressive Building, will be officially presented to the town.
A shuttle bus will be available to take you around the sites to see the many attractions. More information including ticketing details are available on https://events.teawaroa.nz
