This month – Crossfit!

by Kaiya Jones, Year 13 Student, Kaipara College

Kia Ora Reader!

Let’s start this month’s section off with a cracker shall we! Kaipara College is proud to announce that it sent its first ever teams into a Crossfit comp, and had stellar results! KC entered 6 teams, all with only 3 months of training, and all without the proper equipment other competitors had access to. The competitors did 4 work-outs throughout the day which lasted around 12 minutes each, and the aim was to get the highest number of rounds completed within that time. The teams had 45 minute breaks between each work-out where they attempted to refuel and recover, ready for the next work-out. There were 160 teams entered in the competition, and out of those teams there were 5 divisions, separating teams into age and gender. In the divisions we entered students into, KC had not one but TWO teams place in 1st and a team place in 2nd. Their coach (who had only recently done her first crossfit competition the day before) said that the competition was a great experience and the competitors, “Found out how to push themselves, how to find their full potential and found what they’re made of.” An excellent turn out indeed!

Kaipara College also hosted a number of fundraising/event days this past month. This included Market Day, which was Business students’ opportunity to learn about putting their business ideas into practice (ideas which were encouraged to be innovative). Preparation for the day included doing a market survey to see what consumers would be interested in, and after the day they got to see if their research was accurate based on their success (an estimated 98% of the groups profited). The day after, there was Fluro Friday, which was a fundraising day for Saint John’s ambulance services. Students dressed up in their best fluro outfits (which ranged from neon rain jackets to the most outrageously bright wigs) and brought a gold coin donation to support the cause. Another fundraising event was the PSSP (Peer Sexuality Support Program) bake sale. This event aimed to raise funds for the health promotions which the group puts out and it was quite a success- because, let’s be honest, who doesn’t like baking? (If that’s you reader…I don’t know what to tell you, maybe you should see a doctor?)

Since KC is very invested in its students academic career, the school hosts a parent/teacher info evening where parents can book brief meetings with subject teachers to address any concerns (and this is coming up soon). While I do not (I’d like to underline that this is my opinion) particularly care for the evening, as I don’t pick fights and do my work like a good child, I can see its merits when it comes to keeping students engaged and on track for a good year at school.

As it is coming up to term break, I encourage you, reader, to have a break too. All the best! Kaiya J.
