Recently we marked a significant milestone at Kaipara College with our centenary celebrations. Here is the speech I gave at the opening ceremony: Good morning, esteemed alumni, faculty members, current students, and honored guests. It is with immense pride and joy that I stand before you today to celebrate a remarkable milestone in the history of Kaipara College—our centenary anniversary. One hundred years of excellence in education, community engagement, and personal growth is no small feat, and it is a testament to the dedication and passion of everyone who has been part of this institution.

As we gather here today, let us take a moment to reflect on the journey that has brought us to this significant occasion. Founded in 1924, Kaipara College began as a humble establishment with a vision to provide quality education to the youth of our community. Over the decades, we have witnessed tremendous growth—not just in numbers but also in our commitment to fostering an environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Throughout these years, countless individuals have walked through our doors. Each one has contributed uniquely to our legacy—whether as students who have gone on to achieve great things or as staff members who have dedicated their lives to nurturing young minds. The stories that will be shared among alumni today are woven into the very fabric of Kaipara College’s identity.

Among our guests today are people who have served at Kaipara College in a variety of roles and eras, and I want to take a moment to acknowledge these people who have made a difference in the lives of our students either directly and indirectly. Here with us today are current and past teachers, senior leaders, board members, board chairs and local kaumatua. Each of these people have given countless hours of their valuable time to teach, lead, guide and inspire and we are indebted to them for the present-day facilities, for our shared kaupapa, and that intangible something that makes us Kaipara College today.

Today is not only about looking back; it is also about celebrating our achievements. From academic accolades to sporting triumphs and artistic endeavors, our students have consistently excelled across various fields. We take pride in our diverse programs that cater to different interests and talents—ensuring that every student finds their place within our school community.

Moreover, we recognize the importance of adaptability in education. As society evolves, so too must we. Our commitment to innovation has led us to embrace new teaching methodologies and technologies that prepare our students for an ever-changing world. This adaptability ensures that Kaipara College remains relevant, providing excellent education for our time.

To all alumni present here today: you are an integral part of what makes Kaipara College special. Your successes reflect the values instilled during your time here—values such as resilience, integrity, and leadership. These endure today evolving into te WAKA of Kaipara: whanaungatanga, aroha, kaitiakitanga and angitutanga. We are proud of each one of you for carrying forward the spirit of Kaipara into your respective communities around New Zealand and beyond.

Your continued involvement with our college enriches not only your own experiences but also those of current students who look up to you as role models. Whether through mentorship programs or sharing your professional journeys with us, your contributions help shape future generations.

There is a group of alumni and current staff that I would like to acknowledge. First, to the community Centenary Committee made up of alumni, thank you for your ideas and contribution, particularly old boys John Glasson and John Smith who spearheaded the sponsorship drive to reduce the dinner price for our guest supported by current staff member Kim Brenchley - your commitment to making the event affordable to everyone was admirable. Secondly, to the community organisations who have supported Kaipara College with everything from floral arrangements to picnic tables to tea cups, we are so grateful for your generous support. I would also like to take a minute to thank our wonderful staff and students who have given up their Saturday to be here and share the day with you all, with a special thank you to the core staff team who have been involved with the planning and execution from day one, it’s been an enormous task but great to share it with such a wonderful group of people. Another person involved from day one was ex Principal John Grant, and when you receive your beautiful 200-page Centenary book containing an entertaining and well-researched history of Kaipara College I know you will join me in being grateful to John for this incredible piece of work. Finally, it’s with great pleasure that I thank two people: Karina Mules and Erin Stuckey. Karina is the driving force behind our Ag Day and raffle and she has worked tirelessly to produce the amazing event we had yesterday, investing huge amounts of time, energy and love into the Ag Day. Finally I’d like to thank Erin, our Centenary event lead, who took on the mammoth task of organising the event and did the lion’s share of the work with indefatigable grace. Erin, we couldn’t have done it without you and your extraordinary organisational skills, leadership, tact, kindness, and work ethic. Thank you.

As we celebrate this centenary milestone, let us also look forward with hope and determination. The next hundred years will undoubtedly bring new challenges and opportunities for Kaipara College. Together—students, staff, parents, and alumni—we must continue striving for excellence while remaining true to our core values.

Let us commit ourselves anew to fostering an inclusive environment where every student feels valued and empowered to reach their full potential. Together we can ensure that Kaipara College remains a beacon of learning for generations yet unborn.

In closing, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for each one of you who has played a role in making Kaipara College what it is today—a vibrant community dedicated to education and personal growth. Thank you for being here today as we celebrate this incredible journey together.

Here’s to another hundred years filled with inspiration, achievement, and unity!
