Meet Helen Martin, Freelance Journalist
Helen was first published when, aged 12; she won an international short story competition and a £100 prize. That win convinced her she could be a professional writer and, after graduating from Auckland University with an M.A. (Hons) in English, she followed a dual career as a teacher and freelance non-fiction writer. For many years she taught English and Media Studies at secondary school level, then film and television studies at tertiary. Her publications include columns as film critic for magazines including the NZ Listener, On Film and Alternative Cinema and several book chapters, Te Ara online dictionary entries and co-authored books on New Zealand cinema and television, one of which won a national award.
She’s currently enjoying writing for two rural magazines, Valley Voice and Helensville Community News, has written a self-published book on her paternal family history and is now working on its companion, her maternal family history. Since moving to Helensville she has been helping others with their writing projects.
Come along and find out more about her career and forthcoming projects.
