You’ve probably noticed that the name of The Kombuchery in Commercial Road has been changed by new owners Naomi Phillips and Eli Foreman to Te Awaroa Café. Through whanau Eli, who was born and raised here, has connections to the five, local marae. “To local Mâori, Helensville district was originally known as Te Awaroa “ The Valley of the Long River”. We wanted to put a bit of the history of Helensville in the name of our café and Te Awaroa is perfect,” Naomi says.
Other re-claiming of the original name can be found in Te Awaroa Residents and Ratepayers Association, the Nor-West Business Association’s sign at the south end of town and the 2019 South Kaipara calendar.
