When Work Isn’t Fair

Next month the CAB article will cover the important issues relating to migrant exploitation covering:

When Work Isn’t Fair

Understanding migrant exploitation in New Zealand — and what you can do if it happens to you or someone you know.

What does exploitation look like?

Exploitation can take many forms, and it isn’t always obvious at first. Some workers may feel pressured to accept poor treatment because they are worried about their job or visa.

Examples of exploitation can include:

  • Bullying, intimidation, or harassment
  • Employers taking passports or travel documents
  • Being charged excessive amounts for food or accommodation
  • Being forced to live in overcrowded or substandard housing
  • Not being paid correctly—or not being paid at all
  • Being asked to pay money in exchange for getting or keeping a job
  • Threats against the worker or their family members

If any of these situations occur, it’s important to know that this behaviour is illegal and support is available.

  • Speaking up and getting help
  • A visa designed to protect workers
  • Support while finding a new path
  • A new law protecting workers’ wages
  • Knowing your rights matters
